National Mutt Day, also known as National Mixed Breed Dog Day, was established in 2005 to celebrate mixed-breed dogs and raise awareness about the high number of them waiting for adoption in shelters nationwide. Celebrated annually on July 31 and December 2, National Mutt Day aims to promote the acceptance and rescue of mixed-breed dogs, which make up 80 percent of shelter dogs.
Although purebred dogs in shelters are typically adopted quickly, mixed-breed dogs often face the stigma of being less desirable, leading to longer stays in shelters. Their unique qualities are frequently overlooked, as many people are unaware of the positive traits that a mix of dog breeds can offer.
As veterinarians, we believe that all dogs deserve a loving home, and we have compiled a list of reasons why considering a mutt as your next pet when visiting a shelter is a great choice.
1. Mutts Are Healthier & Live Longer
While all dogs are susceptible to diseases, purebred dogs have a higher risk of genetic conditions due to inbreeding. Mixing genes in mutts results in healthier dogs with stronger immune systems and fewer breed-specific health issues. This leads to reduced veterinary expenses, less stress, and a longer lifespan compared to purebreds. For more information, refer to a genetic study conducted by the AVMA.
2. Mutts Have A Better Temperament
Purebred dogs are often bred for specific purposes, which can lead to behavioral issues. In contrast, mutts are known for their adaptability, trainability, and laid-back nature, making them easier to handle and train.
3. Mutts Are Truly Unique
Mixed-breed dogs are one-of-a-kind with unpredictable physical traits that set them apart from purebreds. Their uniqueness often attracts attention and curiosity from others, showcasing their individuality and fun-loving personalities.
4. Mutts Perform Duties Just As Well As Purebreds
Mixed breeds excel in various roles, such as service and working dogs, proving their capabilities and versatility in tasks like search and rescue, guiding the blind, and detection work.
5. You’re Saving Another Dog’s Life
By adopting a mixed breed, you are not only giving a dog a home but also creating space for another dog in need. Adopting mutts from shelters helps combat unethical breeding practices and supports the well-being of these deserving animals.
This National Mutt Day, consider visiting a local shelter to support mixed breeds. If adoption is not feasible, consider donating to help care for these dogs.
