Pet Disaster Preparation, Hurricane Season

Pet Disaster preparation

Hurricane season is in full swing. Having a plan in place for fur babies is crucial in case of a hurricane or any other natural disaster. Although we wish for no one to be separated from their cherished pets during a hurricane, it is a realistic possibility. Being prepared can facilitate the reunion of families with their pets if they are separated.

The best thing you can do for your pets is to plan ahead so you are ready to care for them during a disaster.

1st) Bring your pets indoors when local authorities say a storm is coming and have your pet emergency preparedness kit ready.

2nd) What to pack in your pet emergency kit:

Start with a larger plastic bin that has a lid that can lock on, waterproof would be better but not necessary.

  • Food: pack at least one week of food for each pet you have. Don't forget to label food with the name of who it belongs to and an expiration date.

  • Medication: pack at least one week's worth of medications, it's best if you can leave them in their original bottles with the prescription written on them.

  • Medical history: get a paper copy of your pet's medical and vaccine history. Most animal hospitals have an online pet portal but to be safe a paper copy is best. You never know if the internet or phone service might be down and for how long. Tip keep all paperwork in a water-tight bag.

  • Insurance paperwork: Keep a paper copy of your pet insurance paperwork with you as well.

  • Photos of your pet: Print out photos of your pets and keep them in a water-tight bag. This could help identify them if a fur baby gets away from you.

  • IDs: Make sure your fur babies have ID tags on their collars with up-to-date phone numbers.

  • Microchip: Be sure your fur-babies microchip info is up-to-date.
